Consolidating your data centre infrastructure to a smaller footprint offers a host of benefits on paper and the potential for immediate efficiency savings and performance improvements that will appeal to many organisations. However, any project should involve the necessary levels of planning to properly realise these potential gains.
The offer of cost reductions, improved service levels and better resource management does create a compelling argument, but the worst case scenario delivers a badly performing infrastructure with poor resilience that fails to provide the required capacity or meet a company’s requirements. With this in mind, organisations need to take the right approach to data centre consolidation that is properly designed and implemented with the necessary building blocks in place and based on proven knowledge.
