Data centre operators and other IT professionals need to be aware of energy efficiency, as sustainability is becoming an increasingly important issue in the industry. This is the view of Steve McNab, environment and climate change partner at the law firm Simmons and Simmons, who said that data centres are the focus of several new carbon reduction initiatives.
“Building data centres and ongoing energy performance management are increasingly regulated,” he remarked. “The ratchet is tightening, with governments and regulators demanding ever more stringent improvements.” For example, the government’s Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme will require IT companies to further boost their green credentials.
Keysource says: For many companies it is time to act. There is an opportunity to achieve more with less, and data centres that use more energy on power and cooling than the actual technology housed within are unacceptable, and totally unnecessary. Such facilities will ensure companies are ultimately penalised under CRC, when in fact substantial savings could be made without large-scale investment.
