Recognising the need for a highly resilient, secure data centre to support the oil and gas industry in Aberdeen; brightsolid approached Keysource due to our successful track record in deploying similar solutions.

brightsolid, the leading Scottish cloud hosting and data centre provider, wanted to expand its Aberdeen digital hub which serves the local business community and its growing energy sector. The company commissioned a second state-of-the art data centre facility which represents a £5 million investment into Aberdeen’s energy community. This forms a key part of its commitment to delivering valuable technology solutions that drive down operational cost, increase productivity and collaboration across the industry.

Due to a successful track record in designing and building data centres for other major colocation and technology companies, Keysource was selected to provide both principal designer and principal contractor services for the project. Understanding brightsolid’s business model was critical to the success of the project and Keysource put forward a flexible, modular solution that would deliver high levels of efficiency and resilience, all within the required timeframe.

The design brief was to create a highly efficient data centre that would be simple to upgrade and able to facilitate mixed densities to accommodate different customer requirements. The facility needed to be scalable for future growth without disruption to existing clients, as well as robust and resilient to protect customers’ data and ensure business continuity. Cost efficiency was also important and, as part of this, the whitespace had to be maximised and the existing power infrastructure incorporated in the design.

Completed in just eight months, including the construction of a new roof, the 1700 metre data centre has been designed to deliver up to two mega watts of power across two halls through 400 high density racks, each capable of supporting up to 25 kW.

Keysource incorporated a specialist full data centre monitoring system which integrates environmental monitoring, plant monitoring, power and air quality monitoring with a recirculating cooling system with MERV 8 filters (as recommended by ASHRAE Standard 127 ASHRAE 2007). This will position the bright solid facility as an ISO Class 8 in accordance with ASHRAE guidelines. In addition an N+1 generator system was chosen to ensure that critical power will always be available and provide the required high level of resilience for a colocation environment.

Tier III design certified by the Uptime Institute, brightsolid Aberdeen delivers high standards of business continuity and security. Managed round the clock by an in-house team of expert engineers, brightsolid delivers a 99.999 per cent uptime as standard, and is certified as ISO 27001:2013 security compliant and ISO 22301:2012 in business continuity excellence.
